Pug Characteristics
Rambunctious, perky and affectionate, the Pug has a loving and happy disposition. Pugs were originally bred as lap dogs and they thrive on human love and companionship. They may be clowns at heart, but they carry themselves with dignity. They are playful with a charming personality.
Pugs are highly intelligent and may get bored easily. They are a playful breed who are always ready for games. They love to be the centre of attention and do not like being ignored.
Pugs are very intelligent but also wilful, making training a bit difficult. They can be stubborn and hard to housetrain so early training is recommended. They are loyal and make good watchdogs, though they are not “yappy”. If socialised early, they will get along well with other animals and children.
Pugs tend to be over-eaters and can quickly become overweight if their food intake is not monitored properly.
Pug Major Health Concerns
The Pug catches cold easily and is sensitive to extremes in temperature. They are prone to allergies and chronic breathing problems. Their eyes are delicate, and they are prone to inflammation of, and ulcers on the cornea. They can easily become overweight. They may suffer from Pug Dog Encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain that occurs between the ages of two and three. They may also have Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA).
