Cocker Spaniel Characteristics
The Cocker Spaniel is eager to both work and hunt. They are trusting and respectful of their master. They love everyone and want people to be happy. If not socialised well, they may tend to be shy.
Cocker Spaniels are known for their sound, cheery temperament. They are great with children, elders, and other pets. They love to be close to their family but due to their hunting nature, will chase birds or other small animals when given the chance.
Cocker Spaniels tend to be barkers, so early training is required. They are easily trainable, though, excelling in obedience and agility competitions. They could be difficult to housetrain. Cocker Spaniels also make great therapy dogs. Harsh training methods do not work on them as they have a soft personality – they could become fearful if this type of training is used.
Cocker Spaniel Major Health Concerns
The main concerns with Cocker Spaniels are in the form of eye problems such as cataracts and glaucoma.
They may also have Patellar luxation, or dislocation of the kneecap. They are also prone to IMHA (Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia) in which the immune system attacks and kills its own red blood cells.
