French Bulldog Characteristics
The French Bulldog, or Frenchies, are a playful and affectionate breed. They are seen as quite comical and are often very curious. They require leadership and if left without it can sometimes become aggressive. They bond well with people and like to be around them as much as possible.
Bred mainly as a companion, the French Bulldog was also used as a ratter. They are intelligent but training them must be kept fun and game-like to avoid the Frenchie getting bored. They like to play but are also very content relaxing on the couch.
Frenchies are independent thinkers and can be stubborn. They do not do well on their own and thrive on human companionship. They get along well with everyone, children included, but can be possessive or territorial if around other dogs. Early socialisation can prevent that trait, though.
French Bulldogs are mischievous and humorous and need an owner that understands their personalities. They make great watchdogs and will alert their owners if a stranger is there. They do not require much exercise – a couple of 15-minute walks per day are usually sufficient enough. Frenchies like to be the centre of attention but if they are not over-indulged, they are a good-natured, silly dog.
French Bulldog Major Health Concerns
French Bulldogs are prone to spinal disorders, heart defects, joint diseases and eye problems. They can also have respiratory problems and can wheeze and snore. They are prone to heat stroke and should not be allowed to become overweight.
