Shiba Inu Characteristics
The Shiba Inu is one of the most ancient dog breeds that is still in existence in the worldwide domestic dog breed population. As part of the Spitz family, the Shiba Inu has a spirited personality, characterized by its stubbornness and possessiveness. These natural guard dogs and are territorial of their food, toys, and family. Despite this, they are known for making excellent family dogs and do well in homes with children but are not recommended for households with other pets. While they have a warm and loving temperament, they have a high prey drive and tend to chase small animals and show signs of aggression with other dogs.
Due to its love for a good chase, the Shiba Inu requires standard obedience and leash training. They are not recommended to be off-leash dogs and are best suited to homes with a fenced in yard.
The Shiba Inu needs ample exercise on a daily basis. They enjoy long walks, jogs, or even running alongside a bicycle.

Though a generally healthy breed, the Shiba Inu is prone to certain health conditions, including food allergies, glaucoma, epilepsy, and various cancers.

The Shiba Inu can look much like its Spitz relatives, especially when in a mix. This breed shares a similar size, coat color, and other physical features with its Asian ancestors, the Chow Chow, and the Akita.
